My grandfather – my dad’s dad – “laid concrete” for a living. This is in an era when concrete still had to be mixed and
poured by hand, well at least this was the case for a small business owner from South Memphis.
My father who became an educator and high school principal worked his way through college by helping his father with the family business, mixing and pouring concrete for building projects around the city.
As a child, some of my fondest memories are of my dad taking my mother, sister, and me on Sunday afternoon or Saturday early evening rides to sightsee in different parts of town. Inevitably, we would pass places where my dad would stop the car and point at some house or building. With pride in his voice and a hard to cover smile on his face, he would tell my sister and me that your granddaddy and I helped to build that.
They didn’t build the walls or hang the shingles; they helped to build a particular structure by laying the foundation.
Although our areas of labor and the tools we employ at Concretize are vastly different from what my grandfather and dad used, the inspiration for this company is similar – a commitment to helping you build something special and strong.
